CURRENT s.e. ice Conditions

The goal of this page is to keep southern ice climbers informed of current conditions for North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.  I will post conditions for other states if folks will send me reports.  I would like to at least add the Virginia's if ya'll folks will let me know what is growing on.  These are the current conditions as I have observed or have been reported to me.  Quite often I am out of town and unable to post conditions.  When he gets the chance Gregg A. tries to update the site when I am traveling.  I really appreciate his help.  When my stuff looks dated check out Adam Fox's ice conditions page.  If you can't find the scoop between his site and mine then you are just going to have to go look for yourself.  If any information is incorrect or you have additions and updates please e-mail to the

Due to quickly changing conditions, possible mistakes in submitted information and other unavoidable and unintended errors do not take this information as completely definitive.  Once again I must place a disclaimer.  Ice climbing is dangerous and can result in injury, death and other indignities.  If you attempt to climb something just because this page says it is in climbable condition then you are dumb and we are not responsible. (Just ask anyone that knows me!)  Always seek qualified instruction before attempting to climb ice.

GUIDEBOOKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!!!  CHECK IT OUT!

THURSDAY: 3 JANUARY 2008

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  No report yet.  I'll try to head up today sometime.

Rabun Bald:  No report.

North Carolina:

Doughton Park:  Ice is starting to come in.  Big Daddy and the Gulley are thin but climbable.  The down side is that the road is still open so climbing is closed.  Thanx Mike!!!

Folks...  make sure and email your reports.  I am down in my back and my wife is sick and the doctor has told her she will be bedridden for a couple of weeks.  Other than the odd trip to Hogpen I probably won't be getting out much.  biners@crowderinc.com for those reports.

WEDNESDay: 19 december 2007

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Climbable Ice but slowly coming apart.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215: No report.

THURSDAY: 6 DECEMBER 2007

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  It has been cold enough for long enough for ice to form here.  I went up this morning and the rock was completely dry.  This may have been the first time in my life that I didn't at least see water running down the cliff line.  The drought has us in a lurch in North Georgia.  Pray for rain because without it the cold ain't going to help.

Yonah:  No ice but the rock sure looked nice.

North Carolina:

NO REPORTS

Hwy 215:  Climbed on 215 both Friday and Saturday, though by Saturday afternoon a lot of Ice was collapsing due to warm weather.  Don't know if today's change will bring it back though.  The ice was pretty good on Friday though. Tim A.

Whitesides:  MR and SS were thin but growing.  The former was TR'd Saturday.Yellow Belly and Honey Brown Ale were led with thin/mixed conditions.  CU is fat and the upper gullies looked it.  Stephen S.

Doughton Park:  I went to Doughton yesterday as the BRP was finally  closed. There was some ice to be had here and there but not much was in. It should be forming though yesterday it was too clod and the water on the south end was locked up tight. The north end was dripping however. Led the gulley, which had fat ice, all the way to the top. It provides for a nice 2 rope length excursion! We TR'd several  thinner lines on the north end. Big Daddy was in pretty fat. The slabbier lines left and right had decent coverage. Pace C.

Cedar Rock & Johns Rock:  Climbed at the Sun Wall of Looking Glass Saturday and was surprised to see a good bit of ice across valley at the lower walls of Cedar Rock (below and to the left of Stone Depot Wall when viewed from the Glass...don't know exactly what area this is but the ice looked FAT!).  Also, John's Rock extension slabs (Left of the main wall viewed from the Hatchery Parking lot) had routes formed top to bottom.  Thanks for posting. Sandy B.

TENNESSEE:

Roan Mountain:  Went to roan yesterday, it was in fat. Led some of the taller stuff.  Aaron B.

Hogpen Gap:  The road is closed and has been closed since Saturday.  Should be good ice but no way to confirm.

Hwy 215:  Routes are in good shape except for the tops. They look leadable from the ground then when you get to the topout it gets downright scary.

Whitesides:  Sympathy is touching but very thin.

Doughton Park:  Scott Gilliam reports that Big Daddy was in but thin.  He said his screws were good though.  New Moon to the right of Big Daddy was also lead by "a couple of nice guys from Boone".  The upper gully is thin but leadable and the short flows are in.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215:  No report

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Very thin but a few topropes are in and bonded well.

Rabun Bald:  Gone.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215:  Nothing

Whitesides:  No report.

Big Lost Cove:  White Fang is climbable and do not have a report on Paradise Lost.  I have been told this area is officially closed to climbing on Jan. 15 for the falcon program but this may not be true.  The area where the ice climbs are, may not be part of the closed area.  Take your own chances.  Do not climb anywhere that the signs are posted saying closed.
