JOHN DEERE MODEL L'S & LA'S

     This J.D. series was originally labeled as the model Y while in the prototype phase.  It was designed with small farms in mind.  In the 1930's many of these farms still used horses and mules to pull their plows.  While deeply committed financially to developing a bigger tractor J.D. believed this to still be an important product.  The Y was developed quickly and with few challenges by Willard "Nordy" Nordenson.

     True production was started in 1938 with a few Model 62 pre-production tractors built in 1937.   In 1941 they added a generator, electric start and lights.  These tractors used a J.D. manufactured "Hercules" design engine which produced 10.5 hp on the belt and 7 hp at the drawbar.  The LA produced 50% more horsepower than the Model L.  Production on these cute little tractors ended in 1946.
