HORSE PENS 40

The rock at HP 40 is as fine as a climber could ask for. Comprised of very high quality sandstone it has the perfect texture to allow wonderful friction without being overly abrasive to the hands. Narrow corridors lead to wonderful problems of any difficulty or height. You can stay close to the ground or run out as scary of a highballer as you want.  There are a very high percentage of sloper handholds here, not the sharp incuts and chicken heads you would expect in this region. Many of the problems can only be compared to those found in the scary nether regions of North Carolina. Imagine climbing overhanging routes on Looking Glass type slopers.

Every type of climbing imaginable can be found here. Slabs with small slopers to big overhangs with jug pulls. The sickest water grooves west of N.C. await to test even the hardest of climbers. Enough cracks can be found to feed any crack addition you may have.  After fifteen minutes at HP 40 any bouldertoad will instantly recognize that they have found a little slice of heaven. Horse Pens 40 has the potential to become one of the nations premier bouldering areas. Unfortunately the area is closed to climbing at the present time. The prospects for future access look promising. Check www.southernslopers.com for more information.
